Indonesia prepares weather modification to clear Mt. Anak Krakatau ash

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is preparing weather modification operations to help washing away volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau's eruption, which has spread across parts of Greater Jakarta, Banten, and Lampung.

BNPB Head Suharyanto said in Jakarta on Monday the operations will begin once weather conditions and flight safety permit, noting the volcanic ash has disrupted operations at several airports.

"Once the conditions are more favorable, we will launch the operation. The aircraft are ready at Pondok Cabe (airport)," he said.

He noted weather modification or cloud seeding is one of the government's measures to help clearing volcanic ash from the atmosphere by triggering rain. Additionally, BNPB is preparing water misting to boost the chances of rainfall in the affected areas.

In response to the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, BNPB has coordinated with regional disaster management agencies (BPBD) at the regions affected by the volcanic ash to monitor the situation on the ground and identify response needs.

BNPB has also dispatched personnel to several affected areas to monitor the situation firsthand and ensure local authorities are prepared for potential follow-up impacts of the volcanic activity.

In this regard, Suharyanto called on local governments to ensure the readiness of disaster management mechanisms, including early warning systems, evacuation shelters, contingency plans, and stocks of food and basic necessities.

"If additional supplies are needed, we will push assistance from the central government," Suharyanto said.

So far, he added, none of the affected regions have declared a state of emergency. Nevertheless, BNPB will continue to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to anticipate further activity from Mount Anak Krakatau and its impact on the public.
