Phuket group seeks Israeli event suspension

PHUKET, Sept 8 (TNA) - A local community group submitted a petition to Phuket provincial authorities on Tuesday requesting the suspension of an upcoming Israeli community event in Patong scheduled for Sept. 11, citing safety and security concerns related to ongoing Middle East tensions.

Representatives from the Phuket Protection Group met with acting deputy governor Siwat Rawangkul to present their request, urging authorities to intervene ahead of the private gathering. Group leaders expressed concern that large international gatherings of Israeli visitors could pose potential security risks given current geopolitical instability.

Provincial officials noted that local government lacks direct jurisdiction over events hosted on private property, but agreed to review the matter with security agencies. Officials emphasized that standard security preparations and police deployments are routine measures intended solely to ensure public order and safety for all residents and visitors.

Separately, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow held talks with Israeli Ambassador Alona Fisher-Kamm to discuss tourism compliance and law enforcement measures in southern Thailand.

During the discussions, officials addressed concerns regarding Israeli nationals residing long-term or operating businesses in tourist destinations such as Phuket and Phang Nga. Thai authorities affirmed that domestic laws would be strictly enforced without discrimination against any nationality. The Israeli embassy agreed to assist in distributing cultural and legal guidelines to incoming Israeli travelers via diplomatic channels, tour operators, and airlines. -819 (TNA)
