Ambassador to Belgium chairs GCC side at meeting with EU Political and Security Committee ambassadors

Manama, Sep. 9 (BNA): Dr. Mohammed Ali Bahzad, Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and Head of the Kingdom’s Mission to the European Union, chaired the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) side at a meeting between GCC ambassadors and ambassadors of the European Union’s Political and Security Committee (PSC), representing the 27 EU member states.

 

The meeting was part of ongoing consultations and coordination between the GCC and the EU on preparations for the second GCC-EU Summit, scheduled to be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in October.

 

The meeting discussed the repercussions of the Iranian attacks against GCC countries and their implications for regional security and stability.  It underscored the importance of respecting states' sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting attacks on civilian infrastructure and vital facilities, de-escalating tensions, and intensifying international efforts to safeguard regional security.

 

The meeting also addressed the importance of ensuring maritime security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab Al Mandab Strait, and the need to work closely with international partners to ensure the uninterrupted flow of international shipping and trade in accordance with international law, given its direct implications for energy security, global economic stability, and supply chains.

 

It also emphasised the importance of continued political and diplomatic coordination in response to ongoing developments.

 

The meeting further stressed the importance of advancing the strategic partnership agenda between the GCC and the EU and continuing efforts in shared priority areas, particularly maritime security, energy, economic cooperation, and mobility.

 

Such efforts would serve both sides' interests, strengthen regional and international stability, and help shape the outcomes of the upcoming GCC-EU Summit on connectivity, further strengthening the strategic partnership and advancing shared interests.
