Former Thai Abbot Arrested in Temple Embezzlement Probe

AYUTTHAYA, Sept 11 (TNA) - Thai police have arrested a former senior Buddhist monk and a female associate for alleged embezzlement following an initial investigation that found about 100 million baht ($3 million) in diverted temple donations, authorities said on Friday.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) said Phra Wachirayan, the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, was disrobed following an internal monastic investigation that confirmed sexual misconduct.

Police launched a probe in July following an anonymous tip alleging the abbot had diverted temple donations to an unemployed associate, identified as Poonyavee.

"The suspect issued temple donation receipts to worshippers but failed to deposit the funds into the temple’s bank accounts," CIB Chief Lt. Gen. Nattasak Chaowanasai told reporters.

Investigators searched six locations across four provinces, seizing more than 498 million baht ($15 million) in cash, gold, and bank deposits from the monk’s quarters. 

Police also confiscated cash, gold, land title deeds, and financial documents worth over 215 million baht ($6.5 million) from Poonyavee’s residence.

The former abbot faces charges of embezzlement by an official, misconduct, and conspiracy to launder money. Poonyavee has been charged with aiding an official in misconduct and money laundering conspiracy. Both suspects remain in police custody and face penalties ranging up to life imprisonment. -819 (TNA)
