Lab Results Rule Out Bird Flu in Chiang Mai Tiger Deaths

BANGKOK, Feb 23 (TNA) - Laboratory results have confirmed that the deaths of 72 tigers at the world-renowned Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai were caused by Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) and Mycoplasma bacterial infections, not bird flu as previously rumored, Deputy Agriculture Minister Amin Mayusoh announced on Monday.

The Department of Livestock Development reported that the co-infection of CDV and Mycoplasma spp. led to severe pneumonia and fatal complications. Officials clarified that CDV affects canines and large wild cats but is not transmissible to humans.

"The situation is now under control, and tests definitively ruled out H5N1 avian influenza," Amin said. He added that Deputy Prime Minister Thammanat Prompow has ordered strict surveillance and proactive measures to maintain public confidence.

Meanwhile, Chuvit Pitakpornphallop, owner of Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai, clarified that all 72 tiger carcasses were destroyed under the strict supervision of the Department of National Parks and the Department of Livestock Development. Initially incinerated and later buried according to academic standards to prevent further spread, Chuvit emphasized that no parts were or will be sold commercially.

Following a period of closure for rigorous biosecurity cleaning and disinfection, the facility confirmed the outbreak is now contained. Chuvit added that the establishment cooperated fully with authorities throughout the investigation and plans to resume operations shortly. -819 (TNA)
