Thai PM Calls for UN Reform, Equal Representation at General Assembly

NEW YORK, Sept 24 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul called for reforms to the United Nations during his address to the 81st UN General Assembly on Thursday, emphasizing the need for equal representation among nations to restore trust in multilateralism.

Speaking under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All," Anutin stated that reform must begin with genuine trust built through inclusive cooperation, ensuring that smaller or previously unheard nations gain a voice.

He noted that peace extends beyond the absence of war to encompass constructive international cooperation.

In his statement, the prime minister addressed global conflicts, including Palestine, and noted Thailand's engagement with Cambodia through bilateral negotiations, clarifying that mechanisms under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) apply specifically to maritime boundary delimitation. He also reaffirmed Thailand’s support for peace and national reconciliation in Myanmar.

Anutin highlighted Thailand's joint efforts with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to combat narcotics and underscored cross-sectoral collaboration to prevent cybercrime.

A rules-based international order and equal participation by all nations in shaping a shared future are critical conditions for restoring confidence, he concluded, adding that countries must work together to deliver tangible results for their people. -819 (TNA)
