Thai court hands suspended sentence to man over jet ski stunt on flooded Bangkok street

BANGKOK, Sept 29 (TNA) - A Thai court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to a suspended one-month prison sentence and a fine after he rode a jet ski through a flooded main road in central Bangkok, police and court officials said.

Police at Makkasan station in Bangkok charged the driver, identified as Sorn, 28, with causing a public nuisance and obstructing traffic following widely shared social media videos showing him accelerating through floodwaters on New Phetchaburi Road, spraying water onto nearby residents. A second individual, identified as Prao, was charged with supporting the act.

The Phra Nakhon Nuea Kwaeng Court found Sorn guilty of causing a public nuisance in a public area. Sentence reductions were granted following a guilty plea, reducing the penalty to a 15-day suspended jail term, a 5,000 baht ($150) fine, one year of probation, and 12 hours of community service. The court also ordered the confiscation of the jet ski used in the incident.

Speaking to investigators, Sorn expressed regret for his actions, stating he had lived abroad for many years and did not anticipate the severity of the reaction. He added that he intended the act to bring humor to people during a stressful flood situation. -819 (TNA)
