Iranian, Nigerien FMs discuss expanding mutual ties

Tehran, IRNA –Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Nigerien counterpart, Bakary Yaou Sangare, have met on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, discussing bilateral relations and international developments.

Araghchi—who has traveled to New York to attend the annual UNGA sessions— sat down with Sangare on Monday evening, with the talks being largely focused on Iran-Niger ties, as well as issues of common concern.

The two top diplomats, while expressing satisfaction over growing bilateral relations, also discussed ways to boost them and foster joint cooperation within the framework of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Emphasizing Iran's determination to strengthen relations with African nations—especially AES members—the Foreign Minister expressed hope that a joint meeting between Iran and the three member states of the Sahel alliance would be held at the earliest.

Araghchi expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by the people of Niger with the Iranian nation and government, in the face of illegal and unjustified military aggression launched by the United States and the Israeli regime.  He also commended Niger’s principled stance in opposing the instrumental use of the IAEA Board of Governors against Iran.

He further underscored Iran's support for the Nigerien government's efforts to safeguard its independence and national sovereignty, maintain security and stability, and advance its development programs.

During his stay in New York, Araghchi met and held discussions with dozens of his counterparts from various countries as well as representatives of international organizations, on the sidelines of this year's UN General Assembly.
