Samsung to start producing 40-nanometer chips this month
SEOUL, July 21 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of
computer memory chips, said Tuesday it plans to begin mass production of its
latest and fastest chip model later this month.
The company will begin production of its 2-gigabit DDR3 DRAM chip, based on its
40-nanometer technology, six months after it developed the world's first
40-nanometer chip.
The company expects the new product will lower power consumption to 70 percent of
that for 50-nanometer DRAM chips. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter.
The technology will also improve productivity by as much as 60 percent, as each
DRAM chip will take up a smaller space on the production line, Samsung said.
DRAM is a type of memory that stores each bit of data in a separate electronic
component within a circuit. It is used in personal computers and other electronic
devices such as mobile phones.
