POLICE STILL CANNOT PROVE JI'S INVOLVEMENT

Jakarta, July 21 (ANTARA) - Police said they still had no solid proof that the radical Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) network was involved in last Friday's bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Kuningan, South Jakarta.

"Regarding JI's involvement, yes, there are indications and the national police chief has all along been saying so but the problem is we still don't have proof," Insp Gen Nanan Sukarna, chief of the National Police headquarters' public relations division, said here Tuesday.

He said police could not state that a certain group was involved unless they had strong proof to back up their statement.

"The indications still have to be proven," he said.

The case is the same as the alleged involvement of Malaysian-born extremist Noordin M Top who is wanted for a number of terror cases, he said.

Nanan said to know if Noordin was really involved in the recent bombings, all the suspects, including Noordin, had to be caught first.

He called on all people and mass media not to give information which was about opinions nor ask about investigation techniques done by the police.

"If the police unveil their investigation plans to the mass media it will create difficulties because the suspects will know and change their escape plans," he said.

Nanan also asked journalists not to provoke the police or investigators in the field because such acts would confuse the police in their efforts to unveil the case.

"Do not provoke them with questions that are technical. If the police are provoked and their replies are then published in the media their strategy may be compromised," he said.

Nanan hoped if journalists had data that gave clues about the suspects if would be better if they did not release them through their media until the suspects were caught.

Nine people were killed in the bombings on Friday while more than 50 were wounded.

The police believe the attacks were done by suicide bombers, one of whom was N whose presence in the hotel had been detected by CCTV which had also been shown by televion stations.

However, police could not yet confirm their belief to the media as their investigation was still ongoing.
