MALAYSIA TO CONSIDER MIGRATING TO IPV6

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- In view of the rising demand for internet address space, Malaysia is mulling a move to migrate its internet network to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) from the current 4 (IPv4).

Information Communication and Culture Deputy Minister Joseph Salang Gandum
said that in 2004, a National IPv6 Council was set up to study, among others,
implications in establishing the IPv6 network in terms of policy, regulatory
environment, investments, timelines, manpower requirements and infrastructure
deployment.

"These initiatives are testimony of the government's commitment and
recognition of the important role played by advanced communications
infrastructure to support the development of research and development activities
in the country," he said when opening the 28th Asia Pacific Advanced Network
(Apan) meeting here Tuesday.

Apan, a non-profit international consortium established on June 3, 1997,
is designed to be a high-performance network for research and development on
advanced next-generation applications and services.

Salang said the commitments would provide an adequate broadband to all
universities and higher learning institutions in the country, as well as
between the Malaysian Research and Education Network (MyREN) and other national
research and education networks globally.

Under the second phase of its expansion, MyREN had been allocated with
about US$12 million (US$1 = RM3.5) to enable all private institutions of higher
learning, government research instititutions and private industry laboratories
to further enhanced global networking and cooperation in research and
development, he added.

"To facilitate research communities to establish linkages with world-class
research institutions, MyREN has been linked to the international research
network through the Trans-Eurasia Information Network 3 (TEIN3)," he said.

Salang said the government would follow closely, the progress of MyREN2
which was scheduled to be fully operational by year-end or early next year.

About 400 delegates from 20 countries participated in the four-day
event which was co-sponsored by Universiti Sains Malaysia's national advanced
IPv6 centre, Universiti Putra Malaysia's infoComm development centre and MyREN.

Salang said the meeting would highlight 25 different sessions dealing
with various topics such as high definition TV, earth monitoring, disaster
warning, agriculture and telemedicine.
