Al-Baha Becomes First Region with Full Thermal Tower Coverage to Protect Vegetation

Al-Baha, October 19, 2026, SPA -- Al-Baha Region has become the first in Saudi Arabia to fully implement a surveillance tower and thermal camera system for early fire detection, with 20 towers now operating and linked to a central hub, providing 100% coverage of its forests and vegetation.
Director General of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification branch in Al-Baha Region Mohammed Al-Zahrani said the project, recently inaugurated by the region's governor, uses 20-meter solar-powered steel towers equipped with cameras that detect smoke, heat, and hotspots, integrated with geographic information systems (GIS) for rapid response and decision-making.
The project is part of a strategic initiative to install 100 surveillance towers and thermal cameras in Al-Baha, Aseer, Makkah, Jazan, and Najran regions, supporting Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.
