MALAYSIAN FIRMS NEED TO BE GLOBAL CHAMPIONS, SAYS MALAYSIAN PM

By Muin Abdul Majid

ABU DHABI, July 22 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak
has urged Malaysian companies to be global champions as Malaysia strives to
become a key player in the global and networked economy.

He said they have what it takes to become successful, as shown by the
achievements of many Malaysians firms in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

"Many of you have been able to compete with and even outbid some of the
more established American and European companies. There is the 'Malaysia
Boleh' spirit here and I'm heartened by this," he said at a dialogue session
Monday night with representatives from Malaysian companies operating mainly in
Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The prime minister had a brief stopover in Abu Dhabi en route to Malaysia
after visiting Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

He described the Malaysian firms in the UAE as trailblazers who had opened
up the path for other Malaysian companies.

Najib gave credit to the Abu Dhabi government for what he described as its
futuristic thinking in bringing about further development and progress to the
emirate, the largest of seven emirates that make up the UAE.

He said he considered Abu Dhabi an important and strategic partner of
Malaysia not because of the emirate's wealth but the strategic thinking shown
by its leaders.

According to him, this was evident by the billions of dollars being
invested in renewable energy.

"And I'm truly impressed with the massive transformation of Abu Dhabi. I
was here about four years ago, and I can hardly recognise the place now," he
said at the dialogue session which was also attended by Malaysian Ambassador to
the UAE Yahaya Abdul Jabar and Consul-General in Dubai Syed Mohamad
Hasrin Tengku Hussin.

The prime minister said the Malaysian government would continue to nurture
strong bonds with Abu Dhabi, including in the economic sphere.

While here, Najib announced a major initiative by the Abu Dhabi government
whereby a sovereign wealth fund it wholly owns is set to make a US$1 billion
investment in Malaysia in the energy, real estate and hospitality sectors.

He disclosed this following talks with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince General
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Monday night.

"If we can create opportunities for them in Malaysia, perhaps they too can
do the same for us here.

"I'm sure that we can leverage on the reservoir of goodwill between us to
bring about opportunities for both Malaysian and UAE companies," said Najib.

The prime minister said the government would strive to position Malaysia
favourably among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations in a bid to have
meaningful partnerships towards a sustainable development for Malaysia.

The GCC groups Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE and Saudi Arabia.
