Iraq Assumes Major Responsibility in Handling Terrorist Detainees, Completes Legal Procedures: National Security Adviser

BAGHDAD / NINA/- National Security Adviser Qasim Al-Aboudi said on Monday that Iraq had assumed a major responsibility by receiving terrorist detainees and completing all necessary legal procedures concerning them.

He added that the government, headed by Ali Al-Zaidi, had taken several measures to strengthen the country's security and stability and adopted comprehensive reforms as part of its government programme.

According to a statement issued by the media office of the National Security Adviser, Al-Aboudi made the remarks during a meeting at his office with a delegation of members of the United Kingdom's Parliament, headed by Sadiq Al-Hassan.

The meeting discussed ways to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Iraq and the United Kingdom in a manner that serves the mutual interests of both countries and their peoples.

Al-Aboudi described relations between Iraq and the United Kingdom as historic and distinguished, particularly in the economic, political and cultural fields.

He noted that Iraq had fought ISIS and terrorism on behalf of the international community and had ultimately defeated terrorist organisations, stressing that the international community should benefit from Iraq's experience and expertise in this field.

The National Security Adviser further highlighted the significant responsibility undertaken by Iraq in receiving terrorist detainees and completing the relevant legal procedures.

He said the government had introduced a series of measures to reinforce national security and stability and embarked on comprehensive reforms under its government programme. These include placing all weapons under state control, combating corruption, developing alternative energy export routes and strengthening the national economy, with a view to achieving sustainable and secure development based on balanced relations with all brotherly and friendly countries.

For their part, the UK parliamentary delegation praised the Iraqi government's role in restoring stability to the region through diplomacy, respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

The statement added that the British delegation expressed the United Kingdom's readiness to establish strategic partnerships with Iraq across various sectors, based on the mutual interests of both countries./ End
