(LEAD) Seoul stocks end up 0.71 pct on foreign buying
SEOUL -- South Korean stocks closed 0.71 percent higher Tuesday, bolstered by
massive foreign buying, analysts said. The local currency gained against the U.S.
greenback.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 10.48 points to
1,488.99, marking a sixth-day gaining streak. Volume was moderate at 507.9
million shares worth 6.6 trillion won (US$5.3 billion), with winners outnumbering
losers 443 to 342.

(LEAD) 8 injured as standoff continues at Ssangyong plant
PYEONGTAEK, South Korea -- At least eight people were injured Tuesday at Ssanyong
Motor Co.'s only assembly plant as thousands of riot police were locked in a
standoff for the second day with workers who were laid off from the company,
police and company officials said.
Armed with a court-issued eviction order, about 3,000 riot police on Monday
entered the plant in this rural town, about 70km south of Seoul, where nearly
1,000 workers have occupied a paint shop for two months to protest massive job
cuts.

Assembly speaker urges compromise over media bills
SEOUL -- South Korea's parliamentary chief on Tuesday said rival parties must
reach a compromise and normalize legislative sessions by the end of this week,
indicating he may invoke his authority and put key bills to vote regardless of
objections.
With the current parliamentary session coming to an end Saturday, President Lee
Myung-bak's Grand National Party (GNP) and the main opposition Democratic Party
(DP) have been locking horns over a proposed reform bill that would allow
cross-ownership of broadcast and print media, causing weeks of deadlock in the
parliament.

S. Korean soldier sent to N. Korea during Vietnam War may have been executed: official
SEOUL -- A South Korean soldier heard condemning his government on North Korean
radio broadcasts after disappearing during the Vietnam War may have been executed
by a firing squad for trying to escape the communist state, a Seoul official said
Tuesday.
Army Ssg. Ahn Hak-soo was on his final furlough when he failed to return to his
unit fighting alongside U.S. troops in the 1954-75 war against communist
Vietnamese forces.

(LEAD) S. Korea ups alert level against new flu
SEOUL -- South Korea's health authorities said Tuesday that they heightened the
nation's disease alert status against influenza A to the second-highest level as
the contagious virus is showing signs of spreading fast across the country.
"We have decided to raise our national disease alert status by one notch as cases
of community infections are growing in which transmission routes cannot be
verified," the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs said in an
e-mailed statement.

N. Korean diplomats set to arrive in Phuket for regional forum
PHUKET, Thailand -- A delegation of North Korean officials was to arrive here
later Tuesday to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), at which they are
expected to face strong pressure from other countries over Pyongyang's missile
and nuclear provocations, a diplomatic source said.
"The North Korean delegation, led by Amb. Pak Kun-gwang, is scheduled to arrive
in Phuket at around 4 p.m. today by way of Bangkok," the source said, asking not
to be named.
