PM TO ANNOUNCE CRIME-FIGHTING DETAILS MONDAY
PETALING JAYA, July 21 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak is expected
to announce on Monday details of the measures to fight crime under one of the
six National Key Result Areas (N-KRA) to be implemented in September, Home
Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Tuesday.
"The details to be announced by the prime minister would include the hot
areas and crime statistics," he told reporters after launching the Ara Damansara
police station and the "Safe City" built by Sime Darby Property, here.
He said Najib would also announce the cooperation to be effected with the
non-police sector, such as the attorney-general's chambers, the courts and
prisons.
"The prime minister is most serious in the matter (of fighting crime). I
myself will brief him weekly on the developments," said Hishammuddin, who has
set up an operations room to monitor crime at ministry level. Najib also has a
similar operations room in the Prime Minister's Department in Putrajaya.
Hishammuddin said he had directed the operations room in Bukit Aman and
those at state and district level to identify the areas with a high crime rate.
On the "Safe City" model developed by Sime Darby Property, he said the
project was one step beyond the conventional.
The "Safe City" is equipped with 22 closed circuit television cameras which
operate round the clock and are linked directly to the police station and the
Petaling Jaya police headquarters.
Hishammuddin also said that community policing, which was regarded as the
basis of safe cities, would be extended to encompass other agencies such as the
People's Volunteer Corps (Rela), the Department of Civil Defence and the
National Anti-Drug Agency.
"Community policing must be executed with sincere commitment," he said.
