KRX to jointly set up stock exchange in Laos

SEOUL, July 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's bourse operator said Thursday it has agreed with the Laotian government to jointly set up a stock exchange in the Southeast Asian country next year.

The Korea Exchange (KRX) said it will hold a 49-percent stake in the envisioned
bourse, with the Laotian government owning the remainder.
The planned stock exchange will launch in June next year, with the first trading
to be started four months later, the KRX said.
"The latest deal is expected to help local brokerage houses expand into Southeast
Asian countries, as well as encourage Laotian companies' stock listing on the
Seoul bourse," the KRX said in a statement.
The Seoul bourse operator has been stepping up efforts to help Southeast Asian
countries establish bourses since the late 1990s, helping Vietnam and Cambodia
set up stock exchanges.
