S. Korea working on package deal for denuclearization of N. Korea: Lee aide
By Sam Kim
SEOUL, July 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is working to create a package deal that would offer North Korea incentives for its full denuclearization once the communist state is pressured back into talks, a top presidential aide said Thursday.
North Korea was slapped with tougher U.N. sanctions after it conducted its second
nuclear test on May 25.
Kim Sung-hwan, senior presidential secretary on foreign and security affairs,
said South Korea is working with four other nations involved in efforts to
denuclearize North Korea to come up with a deal that would be offered once the
sanctions run their course.
"North Korea is currently in a phase of sanctions. But the five other nations of
the six-nation talks are discussing what will be included in our comprehensive
proposal once the punishment is over," he said
"The five-way dialogue is a chance to discuss not how to implement sanctions on
North Korea, but what to discuss with North Korea" when Pyongyang returns to
talks, Kim said in a lecture in Seoul.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and U.S. President Barack Obama agreed in
their most recent summit to prepare a package deal for North Korea when Pyongyang
chooses to end its diplomatic isolation, Kim added.
