UAE TO FINGERPRINT RESIDENCE VISA APPLICANTS
By Muin Abdul Majid
DUBAI, July 23 (Bernama) -- Beginning next month, residence visa applicants
in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be fingerprinted to ensure they have no
criminal records, it has been reported.
Federal Naturalisation and Residency Department acting director-general
Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Minhali said they would be fingerprinted under
a tighter biometric system to provide more secure identification and prevent
fraud.
"Fresh applicants for residence visas will have their fingerprints taken
before the medical check-up," he told Gulf News daily.
He said visas would not be granted to those with criminal record and they
would be handed over to the police for further action, the daily quoted him as
saying.
Residents living in the country would be fingerprinted when they apply for
renewal of their visa, said Al Minhali.
The exercise would eventually cover all residents in the country, including
workers sponsored by their employers, investors, domestic workers and parents of
residents, the daily said.
