CRIME PREVENTION FOUNDATION TO EXPAND `SAFE COMMUNITY` CONCEPT

JOHOR BAHARU (Malaysia), July 23 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Crime Prevention
Foundation (MCPF) is working at expanding the 'Safe Community' concept
nationwide.

Its vice-chairman Lee Lam Thye said the 'Safe Community' concept aimed at
curbing crime in housing areas, schools and their surrounding areas, workplaces
and other public places.

"We hope this concept can be effectively put into practice nationwide in
line with the 1Malaysia concept. The 'Safe Community' concept has been
successfully implemented in Hong Kong and I've seen for myself how it is done
there."

He was speaking to reporters after visiting the southern state of Johor
police headquarters, here, Thursday. Also present were Johor police chief Mohd
Mokhtar Mohd Shariff and state MCPF chairman Tan Kok Hong.

Lee said the MCPF was happy with Prime Minister Najib Razak's
announcement that preventing and combating crime was among the six national Key
Result Areas.

He said while MCPF, as a non-governmental organisation, had been supporting
police efforts in combating crime, the police force itself needed a bigger
allocation from the government to acquire the latest equipment and technology to
prevent and check crime.

In another development, Lee said the national-level Crime Prevention Month
organised by MCPF would be launched on Aug 15 in Putrajaya, Malaysia's new
administrative capital just outside Kuala Lumpur.

He said the campaign this time would focus on schoolchildren who would be
instilled with good values in the effort to prevent crime.
