on Friday.

-----------------
(3rd LD) Samsung Electronics reports better than expected Q2 earnings
SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's leading computer memory chipmaker,
reported better than expected second-quarter earnings on Friday, buoyed by brisk
sales of mobile handsets and LCD panels.
The company's net profit reached 2.25 trillion won (US$1.8 billion) in the
April-June period, up 5.2 percent from a profit of 2.14 trillion won a year
earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.
-----------------
(2nd LD) S. Korean economy grows 2.3 pct in Q2
SEOUL -- The South Korean economy grew at the fastest pace in more than five
years in the second quarter as economic stimulus packages helped boost consumer
spending and exports rose, the central bank said Friday.
But the Bank of Korea (BOK) remained cautious, noting that as the effects of
fiscal spending will likely abate down the road, future growth will depend on how
robust exports remain and how quickly the job market recovers.

U.S. closely watching N. Korean proliferation efforts: Pentagon
WASHINGTON -- The United States is closely monitoring any efforts by North Korea
to proliferate its weapons of mass destruction -- trade that is banned under a
United Nations resolution, the Pentagon said Thursday.
"The United States is fulfilling its obligations," spokesman Bryan Whitman said
in a daily news briefing. "We have a role in that. We have certain capabilities
and resources. We are, obviously, watching North Korea closely from many
different aspects: the proliferation aspect, shipping, as well as monitoring
missile activities."

N. Korea began succession campaign years ago with eye on younger son: U.S. report
SEOUL -- North Korea started preparing for a hereditary succession eight years
ago with leader Kim Jong-il's younger sons in mind and accelerated the process
after the leader's alleged stroke last year, a U.S. spy agency report said.
The report by the Director of National Intelligence Open Source Center, dated May
6, suggests the recent emergence of Kim's youngest son, Jong-un, as the heir was
not sudden or impulsive but a result of thought-out, long-term preparation.

Defense company worker arrested over military security breach: investigators
SEOUL -- South Korean investigators said Friday they have arrested an employee of
a local defense company on charges of leaking classified information on military
telesecurity equipment.
The 40-year-old worker, only identified by his last name Jung, allegedly leaked a
class-3 secret document on equipment being developed to prevent bugging in 2006,
the official said.
