Defense company worker arrested over military security breach: investigators

By Sam Kim
SEOUL, July 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korean investigators said Friday they have
arrested an employee of a local defense company on charges of leaking classified
information on military telesecurity equipment.

The 40-year-old worker, only identified by his last name Jung, allegedly leaked a
class-3 secret document on equipment being developed to prevent bugging in 2006,
the official said.
The worker, who appears to have delivered the document to another company as part
of routine development cooperation, belongs to Iljin Hitech, said Jang Young-jin,
a military investigator.
"He was arrested Tuesday," Jang said. Jung could face a prison term of up to 10
years if convicted, other investigators said.
A team of military investigators and state prosecutors has confiscated documents
from several companies this month to look into allegations that classified
material on the development of high-tech weapons, including helicopters, could
also have been leaked, Jang said.
"Analysis of the material is under way," Jang said, adding that retired
general-grade officers who now work at defense companies could be summoned in the
future.
