Death toll from construction accident rises to 5
UIJEONGBU, South Korea, July 26 (Yonhap) -- The death toll from the collapse of a
large steel frame at a light rail construction site here rose to five as an
injured worker died at a hospital early Sunday, local police said.
The accident took place in this city just north of Seoul Saturday evening when a
6-meter-wide steel frame fell off a set of piers. Four workers were initially
found dead, while eight others were injured.
Among the dead were two Vietnamese industrial trainees, police said.
Rescue workers were continuing their search for any buried workers, a city crisis
center said, adding there were no workers trapped under the debris as of Sunday
afternoon.
Police said they were investigating officials from the company in charge of
constructing the section that collapsed to determine the cause of the accident.
The collapsed section is part of an 11km-long light rail system, construction of
which began two years ago and is scheduled to end in 2011.
