Laos, Cambodia agree to preserve Pakha fish

(KPL) Two provinces of Laos and Cambodia, Champassak and Strung Treng have agreed to cooperate in the preservation of Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris).
Locally known as Pakha where is a habitat in Mekong River, Khong district, southernmost province of Champassak.
Two sides would assign a coordinating committee for drafting a regulation for Pakha’s habitat preservation resource between Laos and Cambodia.
A delegation of Strung Treng province visited Champassak province to discuss resolving a conflict of crossing border of local people and Pakha’s habitat preservation site between Champassak province and Strung Treng province.
Mr Bounkham Phothisan, Head of Environmental and Water Resource Office in Champassak province said at a meeting that the preservation site of Pakha is to urge locals in two countries who living nearby the Pakha’s habitat resource to participate in the preservation campaign.
These sites become a biological tourism site to attract more foreigners.
They also agreed to create permanent works for people in the region and plan to breed Pakha fish.
