QUAKE HITS BENGKULU

Pagaralam, S Sumatra, July 27 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale rocked Bengkulu province on Monday but there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 06.10 a.m. was in the sea 73 km southwest of Bintuhan, Bengkulu, at a depth of 57 km, spokesman for the Bengkulu meteorology, climatology and geophysics office Dadang Pramana said.

But the quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, he said.

The quake was strongly felt by people living as far away as Pagaralam, South Sumatra, where many panic-stricken residents and hotel guests rushed outdoors, an Antara correspondent observed.

The temblor caused cracks on the walls of office buildings. But there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

Dadang said the tremblor also prompted residents of Bengkulu city and environs to rush outdoors as many of them were still traumatized by a powerful quake that ever rocked the area.

On Sept 12, 2007 an earthquake measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale devastated several parts of Bengkulu, killing at least nine people. Several aftershocks measuring around 6 to 7 on the Richter scale further impacted the area.

Meanwhile, head of the Mount Dempo monitoring center, Slamet said Monday's quake was felt by people living around the volcano at IV on the Modified Merchally Intensity (MMI).

"The tremblor was felt not only by people living around Mount Dempo but also by those living outside Pagaralam city," he said.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", an area of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

On Sunday, July 26, 2009, an earthquake measuring 5.2 on Richter scale rocked the North Sulawesi provincial capital of Manado at 10.07 am local time.

The quake occurred at a depth of 187 km, about 1 km to the west of Manado and 40 km northeast of Bitung, but it did not have the potentials to create a tsunami.
