PROTECTED ANIMALS CONFISCATED IN RAIDS IN THE CITY
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Wildlife and National Parks
Department confiscated various protected wildlife animals in three separate
raids around Jalan Pudu and Jalan Bukit Bintang here Sunday.
Its deputy director of laws and enforcement Celescoriano Razond said in
the first operation at 11am in Jalan Pudu, the department confiscated 15
protected pigeons and a red whiskered bulbul at a petshop.
"The owner of the shop, a 30 year-old man, did not have a licence to sell
the protected birds," he told reporters here Monday.
He said the man was released after his statement was recorded.
"In the second operation, we arrested a man in his 40s in the same area
and confiscated 10 blue-crown hanging parrots and blue-ramped parrots, " he
said.
"The man was caught selling the birds on a pavement along Jalan Pudu," he
added.
In the third operation, a man in his 60s was arrested in Bukit Bintang at
10pm night after he was caught showcasing three monkeys, a phython and a
long-tailed Macaque.
"The man had a licence to own the animals was misusing it by showcasing the
animals to the public in a inappropriate area, which had also caused
the to suffer ailments," said Razond.
The men are to be charged under the Protection of Wildlife Act 1972
(Section 68) for obtaining wild birds and Section 92 (C) for causing harm to
the animals.
