MARATHON MEETING ON NKRAs FOR NAJIB




PUTRAJAYA (Bernama), July 28 (Bernama) -- Barely 24 hours after unveiling
short-term targets for the six National Key Results Areas (NKRA), Najib Razak
chaired two-and-a-half-hours of marathon back-to-back meetings with five
lead ministers.

The prime minister led the 30-minute meetings, beginning at 9.15am with the
lead minister for improving public transportation followed by the lead ministers
for raising the living standard of the poor, reducing crime, improving
infrastructure in rural areas and combating corruption.

The five meetings, called the NKRAs Lead Ministers Inaugural Taskforce
Meetings, were held at five locations, all in the Putra Perdana Building, here.

The five lead ministers are Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat (improving
public transportation), Women, Family and Community Development Minister
Shahrizat Jalil (raising the living standard of the poor), Home Minister
Hishammuddin Hussein (reducing crime).

Rural and Regional Development Minister Shafie Apdal (improving rural
infrastructure) and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Aziz
(combating corruption).

The Lead Minister Inaugural Taskforce Meeting on widening access to
affordable and quality education was not held Tuesday as the lead minister,
Muhyiddin Yassin who is the Deputy Prime Minister, is currently in Uganda
attending the Global Smart Partnership Dialogue.

The meetings continued even after Najib left for another meeting.
On Monday Najib set specific targets in the six NKRAs in line with his
administration's vision of IMalaysia, People First and Performance Now.
The six NKRAs are:
1.Reducing Crime
* reducing street
* retraining Rela members.
* upgrading equipment for enforcement agencies
* setting up special courts for street crime

2. Combating Corruption
* updating policies, procedures and enforcement
* using open and restricted tender process for government projects

3. Widening Access to Affordable and Quality Education
* making pre-school education part of the national education system
* ensuring all pupils are able to read, write and count when they enter Year
Four by 2012.
* rewarding school principals and hedmasters based on achievements.

4. Raising Living Standard of the Poor
* paying out all welfare cash aid on the first of each month from January
2010.
* creating 4,000 women entrepreneurs by 2012.

5. Improving Infrastructure in Rural Areas
* building 1,500km of roads in Sabah and Sarawak by 2012.
* increasing clean water supply to cover 90 per cent of Sabah and Sarawak by
end of 2012
* increasing electricity coverage in Sabah and Sarawak to 95 per cent by end
of 2012.
* providing 24-hour electricity supply to 7,000 orang asli families in the
peninsula by end of 2012.

6. Improving Public Transportation
* increasing the number of public transport users from the current 16 per
cent to 25 per cent by end of 2012
* adding 35 sets of four-car-trains to operate on the Kelana Jaya LRT track
by end of 2012.
