RELIGIOUS VALUES HELPING CURB GRAFT IN CUSTOMS DEPT

TAWAU (Malaysia), July 30(Bernama) -- Religious values were key facttors in
helping curb graft in the Customs Department, said its director-general Ibrahim
Jaafar.

He said the department often invited Muslim scholars to give talks and
sermons to its staff as part of its effort to curb the menace.

"In the 1980s through the 1990s, the department was in the hightest place in
the bribery index but with the hardwork of the management to instil ethics and
religious values among the staff has made it a respected agency," he said when
launching the the department's state-level of Quran recital assembly in this
town in East Malaysia state of Sabah Wednesday night.

He added that the department would pursue the religious and spiritual
development aspects for its staff with greater fervour in future.
