13 HEADED FOR ISA GATHERINGS ARRESTED
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- Police arrested 13 people in the vicinity
of the National Mosque, one of the areas said to be a location for gatherings in
opposition and in support of the Internal Security Act (ISA).
All were arrested when they reached the National Mosque area in a van at
about 8am.
The arrests were confirmed by Kuala Lumpur Chief Police Officer Mohammad
Sabtu Osman when contacted by Bernama.
Two non-governmental organisations, the Abolish the ISA movement (GMI); and
the Majlis Permuafakatan Ummah (Perwaris) together with the Pertubuhan Pribumi
Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa); who want the act to retained had planned to have
gatherings in the capital to voice their views on the matter.
Several major roads leading into the city were closed. The closures caused
traffic jams in roads heading into the city centre. The gatherings areas
like the National Mosque were deserted with only policemen seen there.
