POLICE DETAIN 200 PEOPLE IN CAPITAL

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- About 200 people linked to the illegal
Internal Security Act (ISA) gatherings have been arrested in the capital up till
4pm, said Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan.

He told Bernama that the situation in the city was under control.

Kuala Lumpur chief police officer Mohammad Sabtu Osman before this said
locations where arrests took place were near the National Mosque, Merbok Field,
Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square), Central Market, National Palace, Masjid
Jamek and the Sogo shopping complex.

Non-governmental organisation, the Abolish the ISA movement (GMI), held the
gathering in the city to voice their views on the act.

Police had to fire tear gas to disperse about 10,000 people who attended the
gathering.

Majlis Permuafakatan Ummah (Perwaris) which also wanted to hold a gathering
at Pasar Seni to have the ISA being retained cancelled their gathering as they
wanted to follow instructions.

The group's spokesman Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz said Perwaris would only
send about 10 representatives to hand over a memorandum in support of the ISA to
the Malaysian King.
