S. Korea has potential to increase bio-gas production: study
SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has the potential to produce enough biogas
from land fills and other sources to fuel 16 percent of its buses on the streets
by 2012, a state environment agency said Sunday.
A study by the Korea Environment and Resources Cprp. estimates that South Korea
can produce about 259,000 tons of biogas daily in 2012, an amount enough to power
3.461 buses to run 150 kilometers each.
"South Korea needs to step up efforts to commercialize the use of biogas," the
study says, noting that only a small portion of local landfills are currently
used for extraction of the pollution-free gas.
A law revision in February legalized the use of biogas as motor fuel.
Biogas is a mix of methane and CO2 obtained from fermentation of bio-wastes and
can be used to produce electricity or heat. The gas helps reduce air pollution by
cutting greenhouse gas emission.
