MALAYSIA: SUGAR PRICE STAYS, SUPPLY SUFFICIENT, SAYS MINISTER
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government has given
assurance that sugar supply was sufficient and there will be no price rise until
the end of the year.
Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ismail
Sabri Yaakob also reminded traders not to hoard sugar to see if the government
would raise the price.
"To those who hoard sugar with the hope that the government will raise the
price, that will not happen. We will not raise the price in the near future," he
told reporters after opeing the 13th Restoran D'Tandoor in Damansara Utama here
Sunday.
On the possibility of the smuggling of sugar given that the price here was
much lower than that in neighbouring countries, Ismail Sabri said his ministry
will meet with the sugar industry, police, the Customs Department and
anti-smuggling units tomorrow.
Earlier, in his speech he said the success of D'Tandoor having franchises in
Subang Jaya and the Kuala Lumpur Tower besides expanding abroad should be
emulated by others.
Also present at the ceremony was Restoran D'Tandoor chairman Azman Ujang.
Restoran D' Tandoor is the first North Indian food franchisor registered in
Malaysia and is an international chain that has operations in Australia, New
Zealand and Saudi Arabia.
At the event 50 orphans from an orphange home were treated
to meals and given donations.
