RP1 TRILLION FUND ALLOCATION NOT FOR RICE IMPORT
Jakarta, Aug 3 (ANTARA) - The government's fund allocation in the 2010 Draft State Budget amounting to Rp1 trillion is not for importing rice, National Development Planning Minister Paskah Suzetta said.
"We have no plan to import rice. The Rp1 trillion fund is set to secure rice stocks at home," Suzetta who is also head of the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) said here on Monday.
He said that the funds would be used to purchase rice at home. The minister made the remarks after attending the plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) on the 2010 Draft State Budget and Financial Note.
The minister said that the government allocated the fund in the 2010 state budget as an anticipatory effort to face possible impact of the El Nino phenomenon.
According to Suzetta, the funds would be used to purchase rice from farmers at home because stocks at the farmers level were still large such as in East Java which reached four million tons.
Besides increasing its rice stocks, he said, the government would also carry out improvements of the rice distribution system by among other things revising rules and regulations which hampered the distribution of food supplies.
On the occasion, Paskah Suzetta also said that one of the government's steps to face the El Nino impact was to increase food or agricultural subsidies.
The government has decided to set aside a fund of Rp144.4 trillion for subsidy allocation in 2010. The amounts consisted of Rp99.4 trillion subsidy for the energy sector and Rp44.9 trillion for non energy sector.
Energy subsidies consisted of Rp59 trillion for fuel oils and Rp40.4 trillion for electricity subsidy. While the non-oil subsidies comprise various tax subsidies which totaled Rp13.4 trillion.
Besides tax subsidies, there are also a food subsidy worth Rp11.8 trillion, fertilizer Rp11.3 trillion, seedlings Rp1.6 trillion, program credit interest Rp5.3 trillion and public service obligation (PSO) Rp1.5 trillion.***
