U.N. assembly chief to show his opposition to A-bomb tragedy+
TOKYO, Aug. 4 Kyodo -
The visiting president of the U.N. General Assembly said Tuesday he hopes his
attendance at this year's peace memorial ceremonies in the two Japanese cities
devastated by atomic bombs dropped by the United States in World War II will
show his strong determination to prevent such tragedies from happening again,
the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.
Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, a Nicaraguan national and Roman Catholic priest who
presides over the 63rd session of the General Assembly, made the remarks when
he met with Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone in Tokyo, the ministry
said.
The assembly president also expressed hope Japan will play a leadership role in
addressing nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation amid positive global
momentum in that direction.
Nakasone, meanwhile, stressed Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the U.N.
Security Council, saying that 80 percent of the Japanese pubic is wishing the
goal will be realized.
After staying in Tokyo, d'Escoto will visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki to attend
the peace memorial ceremonies of both cities, held Aug. 6 and 9, respectively,
according to the ministry.
