IKIM DENIES INVOLVEMENT IN FUND-RAISING ACTIVITY

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- IKIMfm, the radio station of the Malaysian
Institute of Islamic Understanding (IKIM) has denied involvement in any
fund-raising activity for a city-based orphanage.

IKIM director-general Nik Mustapha Nik Hassan said the institute became
aware of such an activity, only when a listener called the station.

The caller had asked the station to verify a letter dated July 15,
requesting for donation and supposedly from IKIMfm, which was sent to her
office.

"We do not hold fund-raising activities. If we were to hold a charity
programme, we will definitely promote it ourselves," he told reporters here
Wednesday.

Nik Mustapha said the letter, written by 'Wan Abdul Rahman Md Amin' who
claimed to be IKIMfm media officer, was a fake.

"In the letter which contained a Maybank account number and his cell phone
number, Wan Abdul Rahman asked the addressee to make a donation to the
orphanage," he said.

Nik Mustapha said IKIM did not have an employee named Wan Abdul Rahman Md
Amin and had neither set up a donation unit nor appointed any fund-raising agent
with a Maybank account, for that purposes.

He said the individual had also offered privileges to a potential donor like
a free promotion of their company and the chance to break fast with the orphans
at a five-star hotel during Ramadan.

Meanwhile, IKIMfm director Ahmad Jais Alias said he had lodged a report at
the Sentul police station, upon receiving the complaint.

He said the modus operandi was to send someone with a letter to major
companies and request for donations via a Maybank account or by handing it over
to IKIM officials who would personally collect it.
