USA monitors two Russian submarines off East Coast - Pentagon.

WASHINGTON, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - Pentagon is monitoring two Russian nuclear-powered submarines, that have been patrolling in international waters off the East Coast for the past few days, senior defence officials told reporters on Tuesday on condition of anonymity.

According to them, they haven't seen such unusual activity of Russian
submarines since the Cold War. However, they said Pentagon is not overly
concerned, as the submarines are sailing in international waters, and
Russia has the right to conduct naval exercises operating according to
international law.

.Released US reporters leave North Korea (adds).

SEOUL, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - U.S. former president Bill Clinton left
on Tuesday North Korea together with two released media woman, Clinton's
spokesman Matt McKenna told reporters. He said they are now on their way
to Los Angeles, where Laura Ling and Euna Lee will reunite with their
families.
The administration of U.S. President Barack Obama repeatedly demanded
to release them. Bill Clinton arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday and met with
North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. Soon after their meeting it was announced
that Kim Jong Il had pardoned two U.S. media women sentenced to twelve
years of corrective labor for illegally crossing the North Korean state
border, and had ordered to set them free.
According to North Korean media, the ex-president offered apologies on
behalf of the reporters and said President Obama would be grateful for
their early return to the USA. Media reports said the visit of Bill
Clinton would contribute to the development of mutual understanding
between North Korea and the USA.
Clinton arrived in the North Korean capital on board a specially
chartered plane without ensigns. According to ABC television, Clinton
would not have gone to North Korea if he had not been sure he would return
together with the reporters.
Laura Ling, a 32 year-old American of Chinese descent, and Euna Lee, a
36-year-old ethnic Korean, both of them working for the American cable
channel Current TV, were detained by North Korean border guards March 17.
In early June, they were sentenced to twelve years of corrective labor
for illegally crossing the North Korean state border and making a video
recording for the purposes of a slander campaign spearheaded against the
country.

.Ash clouds ejected by Kamchatka's Shiveluch rise over 7 km.

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - Shiveluch, the
northernmost of active volcanoes on Russia's Kamchatka has ejected ash
clouds to the height of 7.5 kilometres above the sea level. There is no
danger for the settlements, sources from the Kamchatka filial branch of
the Russian Academy of Sciences' geophysical service told Tass on
Wednesday.
At the moment of the ejection, the volcano was hidden below dense
clouds, but data from seismic stations helps to assess its activity.
A total of 34 quakes have been fixed on the volcano over the past 24
hours. They could have been also accompanied by ash columns up to four
kilometres high. The volcano remains highly active.
The highest in Eurasia active volcano, Klyuchevskaya Sopka (4,750
meters high) has also demonstrated seismic activity over the past 24
hours. A total of 36 local quakes have been fixed there. A cloud of steam
and gas with a small amount of ash rose 100 meters over the volcano.
The settlement of Klyuchi with the population of about 5,000 people is
the closest to the volcanoes. It is situated 32 kilometres away from
Klyuchevskaya Sopka and about 50 kilometres away from Shiveluch. The
highway leading to the settlement runs 20 kilometres from the foot of
Shiveluch. However, there is no danger either for the settlement or for
the highway, specialists believe.
They keep monitoring the volcanoes.

.Medvedev sends congratulations to Obama on his 48th birthday.

MOSCOW, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on
Tuesday sent congratulations to U.S. President Barack Obama in connection
with his 48th birthday.
The message said, in particular: "I recall with warmth our
conversations during your visit to Russia on July 6-7. Your bid for a
sincere dialogue, concrete results, your readiness to make fundamental
decisions have played an important role in our managing to hold our first
full-scale summit with real success".
"I believe the results of the Moscow meeting will make it possible to
speak about prospects for establishing constructive cooperation between
Russia and the USA on the basis of principles of mutual respect and regard
for each other's interests," the message of congratulations stressed.
"Of course, we will have to work a lot on fixing and developing the
reached agreements to see progress in bilateral relations externalise
itself in real deeds. I am sure that this is what the citizens of our
countries expect from us. I expect that we shall continue joint work in
that pragmatic spirit," Medvedev emphasized.
