MALAYSIA-BRUNEI SPIRIT OF NEIGHBOURLINESS MUST BE EXPANDED

From Caroline Jackson

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Tun
Razak said Malaysia and Brunei must focus efforts on widening the areas of
cooperation in the spirit of neighbourliness and on religious, cultural and
language ties.

He said the Malaysian government was certainly serious in such matters as
proven when seven federal ministers and two chief ministers were taken along for
his visit to Brunei.

"I believe the meetings that have been held between the ministers of both
countries just now had paved the way for a widening of cooperation for the
benefit of the peoples of the two countries," he said at the state banquet
hosted by the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah at Nurul Iman Palace,
here Wednesday night.

Najib, who is on a three-day official visit to Brunei, held a four-eyed
meeting with the Brunei leader earlier today in conjunction with the 13th annual
consultation between the two countries.

He said Brunei had always been close to the heart of Malaysians right from
the start when the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Alhaj, the Father of Malaysia's
Independence mooted the idea of the formation of Malaysia in 1963, where Brunei
had also been invited to join.

"Malaysia is grateful to Brunei for being a good neighbour and continues to
enjoy peace and prosperity," he said, adding that Malaysia and Brunei had
established diplomatic relations for 25 years, which had been strengthened with
cooperation in the various economic, social and cultural fields.

Earlier, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who was confident that Najib's leadership
would continue to enhance ties between the two countries, said the government
and people of Brunei would continue to cooperate with his administration.

He welcomed the participation of Malaysian investors in infrastructural
projects in Brunei, including housing projects and also praised more than 14,000
Malaysian nationals who were working to help his country in the field of
development.
