PM TO DISCUSS DRASTIC MEASURES TO CONTAIN H1N1
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak will discuss
with Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai tomorrow on measures to be taken
to contain the spread of Influenza A(H1N1).
Najib said he would obtain the views of the Health Ministry before taking
any action.
"The ministry has a task force to deal with this. We will decide after the
meeting," he told reporters Sunday.
Expressing concern over the matter, Najib said, drastic measures, including
cancelling meetings and gatherings, would be taken if this could help contain
the disease.
"The problem is, we still need to gather... we need to hold meetings, and
there are meetings by Umno and other parties; we also need to organise
activities with the people.
"But if there is a need to take drastic actions, then we should go ahead
with it. We cannot let this to go on," he said.
Eight more people died of the disease Sunday, bringing the death toll to 26.
There are 202 new cases detected overnight, all of which are local
transmissions.
Meanwhile, asked on the reported shooting of terror suspect Noordin Mohammad
Top by Indonesian police Saturday, Najib said he was waiting for confirmation
on the matter.
Noordin, who was blamed for a series of bombing incidents in Indonesia
including on the J.W. Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in Jakarta last month,
was reportedly shot dead during a shootout with Indonesian police in Central
Java.
The Indonesian authorities were carrying out DNA tests on the body.
Najib said he did not want to conclude anything before the DNA test was
completed.
