GOVT TO REVIEW LAWS THAT DISCRIMINATE WOMEN
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The government will continue to review
laws and regulations which are deemed to discriminate women, Prime Minister
Najib Razak said.
He said this was necessary so that women were not prevented from continuing
to achieve success.
"I pledge that the government will look at laws that prevent women from
succeeding and will be fair to women.
"I am a leader who wants to see women succeed," he said at a dinner to mark
the 47th Women's Day celebration tonight.
Najib said he was proud of women's success and development in education,
health and entrepreneurship.
In education, women's percentage in institutions of higher learning
increased from 61 percent in 2000 to 63 percent in 2005 while 67 percent of
students in form six and matriculation comprised women.
As for health, the rate of mothers who died at birth had dropped to 30 for
every 100,000, the lowest in Southeast Asia.
The Prime Minister said he would consider approving programmes organised by
the National Council of Women Organisations (NCWO) for the benefit of women.
