PTA URGED TO ASSIST SCHOOLS IN FIGHT AGAINST H1N1

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Headmasters Council (GMGBM)
wants the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) to assist in the fight against
Influenza A(H1N1) in schools.

GMGBM secretary general Ruslan Madon said support from the PTA, especially
in terms of funds, was needed to reduce the burden of schools to provide
Influenza A(H1N1) infection prevention kits.

"The schools have taken the relevant precautionary measures and initiative
by providing basic needs like face masks and thermometers but we will appreciate
if PTA can assist us in providing financial aid while waiting for allocations
from the Education Ministry," he told Bernama Wednesday.

The Education Ministry had announced an allocation of RM3.6 million to
provide Influenza A(H1N1) infection prevention kits like thermometers, face
masks and liquid sanitisers to all schools, nationwide.

As of Tuesday, Influenza A(H1N1) claimed 38 victims throughout the country
and six of the victims were students below the age of 19.

Ruslan said schools had taken various initiatives to brief students and
teachers of the dangers posed by the H1N1 pandemic.

"If students show any signs or symptoms like fever, we will immediately
check their body temperature and inform the parents to take them home if
necessary," he said.

Another headmaster, Zavirah Shaari, when contacted said students are briefed
daily on the steps to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease, especially
during physical education classes.

"Teachers have been told to explain the dangers of H1N1 and the precautions
to be taken in order to curb the disease. Everyday about 10 students who are not
well, are sent home even if it means skipping their trial exams," she said.

Muhamad Hamin Dorani, also a headmaster, said apart from briefing the
students, posters explaining preventive measures were put up in his school to
create awareness among students and teachers.
