Strong quake jolts Hachijo Island, south of Tokyo+
TOKYO, Aug. 13 Kyodo -
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 jolted Hachijo Island, some
280 kilometers south of Tokyo, on Thursday morning, the Japan Meteorological
Agency said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the 7:49 a.m.
earthquake. The agency said there is no threat of a tsunami.
The government set up a liaison office at the prime minister's office to gather
information about the quake.
The quake measured a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 on
Hachijo Island and 4 on Aogashima Island, south of Hachijo, the agency said.
It originated some 57 kilometers below sea level off eastern Hachijo Island, it
said.
The quake was also felt in such places as Tokyo as well as Fukushima, Chiba,
Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures.
The agency initially estimated the magnitude of the quake at 6.5 and the depth
of the focus at some 40 km. It later revised the figures.
The quake came after a magnitude 6.5 quake shook Shizuoka Prefecture, southwest
of Tokyo, and its vicinity Tuesday, leaving one woman dead and more than 120
people injured.
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake jolted Tokyo and wide areas of eastern Japan on
Sunday with no damage or injuries reported.
