PRESIDENT LEADS INDEPENDENCE DAY CEREMONY
Jakarta, Aug 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led a ceremony to mark the 64th anniversary of Indonesia's independence at the Merdeka Palace ground on Monday.
The flag-raising ceremony was also attended by vice president Jusuf Kalla.
The ceremony was opened with House Speaker Agung Laksono reading the copy of the declaration of independence read by the late first President Soekarno on August 17, 1945.
Security looked tightened around the venue following recent terrorist threat.
The ceremony was also attended by a number of special guests including sons and daughters of the late president Soekarno. Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is also the daughter of the late president Soekarno did not attend the event while former president Abdurahman (Gus Dur) Wahid also failed to attend the ceremony due to health conditions. ***
