HOUSE SPEAKER: INDONESIA ALSO MUST BE FREE FROM PROVERTY

Jakarta, Aug 17 (ANTARA) - House Speaker Agung Laksono called for using the momentum of the country's 64th independence anniversary for seeking freedom in various sectors including from poverty.

"Economically independence also means being free from poverty by not relying on other countries, for instance," he said after attending a ceremony to mark the anniversary at the presidential palace on Monday.

Agung said improvements still had yet to be made despite all the achievements that had been made in the past 64 years such as the improved welfare of the people because many were currently still living under the poverty line.

The chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Hidayat Nur Wahid, meanwhile said besides from poverty Indonesia must also be free from corruption and terrorism which still threatened national security.

"We must be really free not only from colonialization but also from corruption, terrorism, poverty and unemployment. Some progress had been made into this direction," he said.

A number of economic research institutes have earlier projected the number of the poor in the country in 2009 would reach 40 million or 16.82 percent of the total population. It is an increase of around five million compared to the survey of the Central Bureau of Statistics in March 2008, showing the number reached 34.96 million or 15.42 percent of the total population.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led the ceremony at the palace ground which was also attended by thousands of people. The ceremony also attended by vice president Jusuf Kalla was opened with the reading of the copy of the declaration of independence by Agung Laksono.
