POLICE DETAIN 10 PEOPLE, DRUGS WORTH US$211,982 SEIZED

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (BERNAMA) -- Police detained 10 people, who were
believed to be members of a syndicate which used picture frames and cooking pots
to smuggle drugs into the country, in three locations Monday.

In the first raid, conducted at about 7.15pm at a shop lot here, police
detained eight men, aged between 30 and 40, comprising two Myanmar nationals,
three Indian nationals and three Malaysians.

Deputy Kuala Lumpur police chief Abu Samah Mat said drugs, comprising
59.7kg ketamine, 400gm heroin, 79 ecstasy pills (25gm), 150 Eramin 5 pills, 13gm
cannabis and 19gm syabu, worth RM750,000, were seized in the raid.

He said police also seized a Nissan Sentra Nismo car and RM32,000.

"Following investigation, police detained two Malaysians, believed to be
also members of the syndicate, at the Pertama Complex car park and the Star
Seafood Restaurant, Jalan Selayang," he told reporters here today.

Abu Samah said members of the syndicate were active in the Klang Valley area
(Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding areas) and believed to also operate their
activities in Thailand and Indonesia.

"This syndicate is believed active in smuggling of ketamine from India since
a year ago," he added. (US$1=RM3.50)
