MALAYSIA`S NORTHERN PERAK TO EARN US$846 MLN A YEAR FROM M`SIA-KOREA TECHNOLOGY PARK

IPOH (Malaysia), Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia-Korea Technology Park, to
be set up in two places in northern state of Perak, will contribute RM3 billion
(US$846 million) a year to the state's coffers, Chief Minister Dr Zambry Abdul
Kadir said Tuesday.

One of the centres, to be set up here in six months, would provide more than
10,000 jobs to locals, he said.

A research and development centre would also be built on a 20ha site at the
Meru Hi-Tech Park here, he said.

These projects are expected to position Perak as a marketing hub for
technology-based industries in Asean and the Middle East, he told reporters
after witnessing the signing of a collaborative agreement involving three
parties -- Perak Multimedia Dotcom Sdn Bhd, Virtual Bridge Sdn Bhd and Gentro
Tech Co Ltd of Korea (Gentro).

A total of 101 South Korean entrepreneurs involved in the Malaysia-Korea
Technology Centre are expected to open hi-tech plants costing RM1 billion
(US$282 million) on a 28ha site in Pengkalan near here, the capital of Perak
state.

Zambry said the agreement signing for a joint-venture project between two
local companies and a Korean company was in line with plans to turn Perak into a
giant in telecommunications development in Malaysia.

"It's a proactive move for Perak to enjoy the spin-offs from local Telekom
Malaysia's Broadband Rollout project," he said.

He said the plan was a form of collaboration to set up a plant by Gentro to
produce corrugated optical cable ducting (COD) for the Asean and Gulf markets.

" The COD is also a pioneer project towards setting up 101 hi-tech small-and
medium-scale industries by South Korean entrepreneurs," he said.

Zambry said the SMIs would focus on research and development to build
production facilities to manufacture products on a joint-venture basis with the
state.

"If the project can be implemented quickly, it will have an impact
especially on the ICT Policy and the high-speed broadband project.

"It's important that priority is given to the locals as it is the main
condition except if there are other problems," he said.

Zambry also said four more memoranda of understanding (MoUs) would be signed
to prove the seriousness of the collaboration between the two parties.

Present were Gentro president Park Young Jun; Perak Multimedia Dotcom Sdn
Bhd executive adviser Mohammad Afendi Abdul Rahman; Virtual Bridge Sdn Bhd
executive chairman Nur Mohd Ezan Taib; State Financial Officer Jamaluddin
Al Amini Ahmad and Perak State Development Corporation executive director
Samsudin Hashim.
