U.S. official on N. Korea sanctions to visit Japan from Monday+
TOKYO, Aug. 19 Kyodo - A U.S. official in charge of sanctions on North Korea will visit Japan for three days from Monday to discuss with Japanese officials the ongoing implementation of a U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at punishing Pyongyang, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
Philip Goldberg's visit to Japan is part of a four-nation trip that will also
take him to other Asian countries including South Korea.
On Tuesday in Japan, Goldberg is scheduled to meet Akitaka Saiki, director
general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau,
the ministry said.
Saiki is also Japan's chief negotiator at the six-party talks aimed at
denuclearizing North Korea.
North Korea pulled out of the six-party talks with China, South Korea, Japan,
Russia and the United States in April in protest at a U.N. Security Council
statement denouncing a rocket launch conducted by Pyongyang that was widely
seen as a disguised missile test.
North Korea then detonated a nuclear device in May for the second time, which
in turn led to the passage of the U.N. Security Council resolution tightening
sanctions on North Korea.
