Naurzum reserve needs additional financing

Kostanai, August 22, 2009 (Khabar) - Naurzum natural reserve needs protection from steppe and forest fires. The deputies consider the government must discuss issue of additional financing of the unique zone that was included into the list of natural objects of UNESCO. Bottom of Torgai shallow gully occupies over 191 000 hectares of steppe grasses, lakes, meadows and pineapple forest. The biologists found here about 700 types of plants and 282 types of birds. Most of animals are put into Red Book of Kazakhsatn and their number increased during the last years.

Maria Zeinelova, deputy director of Naurzum state reserve:
- The number of disappearing types of birds is increased, for example little bustard almost disappeared in 1980-s and now the population of this steppe bird increased. There are also different types of eagle here.

Last year Naurzum and Korgalzhy reserves were included into the list of natural objects of UNESCO as an object of “Saryarka – steppes and lakes of Northern Kazakhstan”. But this year the Agricultural Ministry reduced financing of the reserve almost twice.

Bakhytzhan Muttakov, director of Naurzum state reserve:
- We need to develop ecological tourism and the regional budget allocated 1 million 800 000 tenge for this. Currently this work is postponed as there are no funds for the development of infrastructure.

In August danger of forest fires is very high and local inspectors work in intensive regime. Maria Zeinelova says they need five fire-engines to preserve unique property of the world community. Last year the reserve management bought one fire-engine, 6 motorcycles and 30 horses to examine the territory. But it is very little and Oral Mukhamedzhanov, Majilis Speaker decided to raise the issue of further financing of the Naurzum reserve.

Oral Mukhamedzhanov, Majilis Speaker of Parliament of RK:
- UNESCO is ready to allocate many funds but the state also must co-finance and we must cooperate in this. It supposes not only taking care of our objects by the world community but first of all care of our state. I think the government must discuss this issue and I will raise this theme in the government.

Currently local forest-guards work day and night and fire dangerous period will end only in October.
