RI, TIMOR LESTE NAVIES EXPLORING COOPERATION

Jakarta, Aug 23 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian and Timor Leste navies are looking into the possibility of cooperation in education, exchange of officers and joint exercises, a naval officer said.

"They (the Timor Leste Navy) wanted to learn from the Indonesian Navy," Indonesian Naval Chief of Staff Admiral Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno said here on Sunday.

The Timor Leste Navy's wish to cooperate with the Indonesian Navy surfaced at a bilateral meeting between Admiral Tedjo and his Timor Leste counterpart Lt. Col. Donaciano Gomes on the sidelines of Sail Bunaken 2009 in North Sulawesi last week.

In response to the Timor Leste Navy's wish, Tedjo said the Indonesian Navy was still studying the model of the proposed cooperation.

It was likely the defence ministries of the two neighboring countries would be signing a memorandum of understanding which would serve as a legal basis for the cooperation, he said.

Asked whether the cooperation would influence Indonesian-Australian bilateral ties, he said there was nothing to worry about, because the Indonesian and Australian navies had already established close relations, including joint patrols in the sea borders shared by the two countries.

"In the joint patrols between the Indonesian and Australian navies there is part of the patrol area touching Timor Leste's territory. And while conducting joint patrols we can use Kupang or Darwin as a transit point," he said.

Naval chiefs from 16 countries paid courtesy calls on Admiral Tedjo Edhy on the sidelines of the Sail Bunaken 2009. The series of bilateral meetings focused on regional maritime security particularly in the Southeast Asian region.

"Most of them were of the view that the Indonesian sea territory including the Malacca Strait is secure," he said. ***4***
