Padang, Aug 23 (ANTARA) - A total of 25 homes were engulfed by floods and landslides in Koto Kaciak, Jorong Koto, Tanjung Raya subdistrict, Agam regency, West Sumatra province, on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Tanjung Raya subdistrict chief Kurniawan Syahputra said on Sunday that of the 25 damaged houses, eight were seriously damaged, and 17 lightly.
Following the floods and landslides, locally called "galodo", 114 Koto Kaciak residents on Saturday night looked safer places like the Grand Mosque of Koto Kaciak, and the home of their relatives.
"But these people have returned to their homes Sunday morning," Kurniawan said.
Besides the damaged 25 houses, galodo also damaged a smaller house of prayer, a kindergarten, an irrigation system, a huller, 2 hectares of fish breeding ponds, and roads.
According to the subdistrict head, the natural disaster which was the first after 1980 had caused Rp4.5 billion in material loss.
He said the galodo broke out after heavy rain in Tanjung Muatiara subdistrict since Saturday morning until 4 p.m
And suddenly, the residents were shocked by rumbling of the galodo at 5 p.m from the Jawi river mouth. Despite the many houses and other public facilities damaged, the disaster did not cause death.
