PONTIANAK IMMIGRATION DETAINS NINE VIETNAMESE

Pontianak, Indonesia, Aug. 26 (ANTARA) - The Pontianak immigration office has detained nine Vietnamese nationals for illegally entering the province.

The immigration office got the transfer for the detaining of the nine Vietnamese from the Siantan police on Tuesday (Aug. 25), Ujo Sujoto, head of the Pontianak immigration office's immigration supervision unit, said here on Wednesday.

The local authorities suspected that the Vietnamese were fishermen who poached in West Kalimantan waters. They were likely hired by local people who wanted to get more profits as Vietnamese fishermen were known as hard workers and quite cheap labors.

"We cannot confirm yet whether they are illegal crew members of local fishing boats or foreign nationals who get lost," Ujo Sujoto said.

The Vietnamese are currently under interrogation.

Meanwhile, Siantan Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Antoni Pelamonia confirmed that he had handed over the Vietnamese to the Pontianak immigration office.

They had entered West Kalimantan without having required documents, meaning that they have violated the immigration law, he said.

He explained that the Vietnamese were arrested on Monday evening at around 10 pm local time, at Jungkat fishing harbor, Siantan sub district, when they were about to rent a fishing boat belonging to a local fisherman.

The Vietnamese are identified by their names as Pham Minh Son (38), Lanin (24), Keul (46), Loi (46), Toon (35), Vinh (27), Tan (36), Viet (39) and Towan (38). ***
